Sister Paula Mayer — Community Outreach

The Sr. Mary Theresa Outreach Building is an active ministry tended by Sr. Paula Mayer and volunteers.  The outreach building houses the St. John’s  Food Pantry as well as transitional refugee housing.

SrPaulaSt. John’s Outreach located at the Sr. Mary Theresa Outreach Building is an active ministry tended by Sr. Paula Mayer D. C.  and volunteers.    Through this ministry, St. John’s tends the needs of the people in its parish.  Here are just a few ways that St. John’s is making a difference.

Food Pantry: Open three days a week for 1-2 hours each day, St. John’s serves 180 households or an average of 508 people every month.  Many are monthly visitors so keeping the shelves stocked and organizing inventory is an important aspect of this ministry, it also is where volunteers can help.  Between the Utica Food Bank, the generosity of our people and grants from area organizations, the Food Pantry can fulfill the call to “feed my people.”

Seasonal Giving: At Christmas, the parish helps support the baskets that are given to people in need.  This is a project that has many volunteers of all ages who help sort and stock the boxes going to the qualifying families.  Through the Little Red Wagon tradition, the parish comes together to make Christmas happen for many families.  As part of the Offertory, purchased gifts are presented at the alter

St. John’s has had a longstanding tradition of helping families in need during the Christmas Season through our Little Red Wagon Project.

That tradition will continue this year, but due to COVID restrictions, it will need to take a different form. Due to the need for social distancing (for workers and recipients alike) we won’t collect toys for the Little Red Wagon, nor will we collect food items for the food boxes. Instead, we are asking for donations of any of the following:
  • Gift Cards (with attached receipt) to Hannaford Supermarkets (with a value of no greater than $25).
  • Gift Gards (with attached receipt) to WalMart (with a value of no greater than $25).
  • Monetary donations (checks made out to St. John’s with the memo Christmas Giveaway. From there we will purchase gift cards with the donation.
If you wish to make a donation to the Christmas Give-away, please send in your donation no later than Sunday, November 29th. You can mail your donation to St. John’s, drop it off in our mail slot (Bleecker St Entrance to the offices), or place it in the collection basket when you come to church.
Signups for those in need will take place at the St. John’s Food Pantry at the St. Mary Theresa Outreach on the Corner of Eagle and Elm Streets. If you would like to sign up for Christmas Assistance, please come to the Outreach (Eagle Street Door) on one of the following dates:
  • Thursday, November 12 (10:00am – 11:30am)
  • Friday, November 13 (10:00am -11:30am)
  • Wednesday, November 18 (1:00pm-2:30pm)
  • Tuesday, November 24 (10:00am – 11:30am)

The Christmas Giveaway will take place on Saturday December 12th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at St. John’s Church. Holding the event in church will allow for appropriate social distancing and will keep people inside in the event of inclement weather.

Thank you in advance for your understanding regarding this year’s changes and for your continuous generosity in our work to help those in need. If you have any questions please call St. Paula Mayer at 315.732.6171.Thank you!!!
